Episode 5: Closed Mouths don't get Fed. Blk + in Grad School

“It’s just weird how certain things remind you that you’re black in this space.”

After a “technically” difficult meeting with her grad school advisor, Allanté was invited to a meeting with the speakers from a panel that was taking place on campus. While the panel topic overlapped Allanté’s studies, she began to wonder if the invitation was extended to promote “diversity”, or if the advisor was creating opportunities for growth. After previously feeling that she was only meant to meet a quota, the genuineness in the moment became harder to decipher.

This week’s “Lessons from the Trap” come from “Me You” by Russ, whose witty lyrics serve as a fascinating comparison to our own lives.  “This ain’t overnight, this is year 10 visions,” speaks to our own visions, and how we work to achieve them. “You always complain like a bitch…” speaks to how people spend more time complaining than accomplishing.

Today’s Lesson: Decide to receive things positively. Your situation may not always be ideal, and it may take longer than anticipated to achieve your goals, but by CHOOSING to be optimistic you give yourself the power to be in control of the outcome.
