Ep. 97: Caribbean Scholar Tings
Kat has always wanted to earn her Ph.D. as her Plan B was to become Whitney Houston 🤣.
She is now a 2nd year PhD student in Higher Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst focusing on Black immigrant & (sometimes international) students from majority Black countries in the Caribbean + how they engage with Blackness in an American context. We talk about her journey starting at a community college to now as a graduate student. I really like Kat's story because it isn't this perfect timeline. Kat lived a few lives between degrees and she's transparent about how she stayed focused on her goal to the Ph.D. through trials, tribulations, and simply life happening.
We also talk about Caribbean Scholar Tings, a passion project Kat started as a proud Guyanese gyal while living as a PhD student. Through this creative outlet she shows pride for her heritage, the Caribbean community and the pathway to becoming a researcher.
